Well that’s a good question!

From experience, I would recommend having a full script with dialog written.

In our case, Marc - the writer - had a full script ready for the first issue as well as a synopsis for the whole story arc, covering the 6 issues.

based on that script, I sat down and was able to break down the story into pages and panels. Knowing where dialog is prevalent helps size-up the panels.

There was a lot of back-and-forth between Marc and I in what was an open process, where script influenced layouts, and in turn script changes were made to accommodate ideas for the layouts and the graphical flow of the book…

I believe you should have a full script before you set down to draw, even though you might change the script later on, just so you can focus on rendering the story and enhance it through the drawings,and layouts rather than define the story as you go along… After all, the greatest work is done when you have constraints!

You could move ahead without a full script if your narrative leans more towards visuals with little or no text.
